Becoming a Master Recycler
Master Recyclers are citizen volunteers who serve as solid waste ambassadors in Jackson County, working within their communities to reduce waste generation, to cultivate public awareness and to support projects of Jackson County Recycling Partnership, Jackson County SMARTWorks and OSU Extension Service.
Each Spring, a 10-week training course teaches 35-40 Jackson County residents, business and government representatives on topics of recycling, waste prevention, composting, and the local solid waste infrastructure. The course includes an extensive training manual, discussion based classes, and presentations from local and regional experts. Field trips include visits to Dry Creek landfill, composting facilities, a waste-to-energy plant and the Medford wastewater treatment plant.

Launched in Spring 2008, the Jackson County Master Recycling program was modeled after existing Master Recycler programs in Portland and Eugene. In its first year, the program was sponsored by Jackson County with grant funding from Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. Jackson County Recycling Partnership now serves as funding and planning organization for the program, which is housed at OSU Extension Service in Central Point.
